How to keep basketball stats

To keep basketball stats from the stands, follow one player and record each stat the moment it happens. Check your totals at every break. These five steps work on paper or on a phone. Statline is the phone version.

1. Follow one player

A team sheet is a scorer's job. One player is a parent's job. Keep your eyes on your player and you will catch the rebounds and steals a team sheet misses.

2. Choose the stats

Points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks and turnovers cover most games. In Statline these are PTS, REB, AST, STL, BLK and TO. FT, 2PT and 3PT for the shot type. Start with four or five. Add more once the tapping feels easy.

3. Record it as it happens

Memory blurs by the break. On paper, that means a tally mark straight away. In Statline it is one tap on a big button in the thumb zone. Hold a button, then tap to take one off. Undo reverses the last change.

4. Check at each break

At quarter time, look at your totals. Points are the stat you can match against the scorer's sheet. Statline keeps the score and every total at the top of the live screen.

5. Pick the headline at full time

At the buzzer, read the stat line and choose the number the game was about. On a day of lost 38-42, the headline might be 9 rebounds with 2 points underneath. In Statline you pick a headline stat and up to two more. The card arrives in your club's colours. When you end the game, Statline shows the key numbers and asks before closing it.

Across the season

Averages update after every game. In Pro, the form guide lays the last five games side by side.

FAQ

What stats should a parent keep in basketball?

Points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks and turnovers cover most games. Keep them for one player rather than the whole team.

How do I fix a mistake while keeping basketball stats?

In Statline, hold the button, then tap to take one off, or tap Undo to reverse the last change. On paper, cross out the tally mark so the count stays readable.

When should I check my basketball stats during a game?

Check at each quarter break. Points are the stat you can compare with the scorer's sheet.

Is there an app for keeping basketball stats as a parent?

Statline: Sports Stat Tracker is an iPhone and iPad app for this. Its basketball buttons include FT, 2PT, 3PT, REB, AST, STL, BLK, PF and TO, and it adds up PTS. Free to start: 1 player, 1 team in one sport, 5 games.
