How to track AFL stats
To track AFL stats from the fence, follow one player. Record each kick, handball, mark and tackle as it happens. Check your totals at every quarter break. These steps work on paper or in Statline: Sports Stat Tracker.
1. Follow one player
Eighteen players a side is a lot of footy for one pen. Pick your player and stay with them all game, at every contest and in every stoppage.
2. Know the stats
A disposal is a kick or a handball. A mark is a clean catch from a kick. Tackles, goals and behinds round out the basics. In Statline the AFL buttons include goal, behind, kick, handball, mark and tackle. Kicks and handballs add up to disposals.
3. Record each one as it happens
On paper, a tally mark straight away. In Statline, one tap on a big button in the thumb zone. Hold a button, then tap to take one off. Undo reverses the last change. On iPhone, every tap gives a small buzz, so your eyes stay on the ball.
4. Check at quarter time
At each break, look over the totals and fix anything you doubt. Statline keeps the score and every total at the top of the live screen.
5. Pick the headline at the siren
The scoreboard has the goals and behinds: won 8.6 (54) to 5.4 (34). Your stat line has the rest. The headline might be 14 disposals, with 6 tackles and 1 goal underneath. In Statline you pick a headline stat and up to two more. The card arrives in your club's colours.
Across the season
Averages update after every game, and each game keeps its opponent, date, result and score. In Pro, the form guide lays the last five games side by side: Disposals 11 · 14 · 9 · 16 · 12.
